Of what you see and what you think,<\/span><br \/>\n<span> what surrounds you, what dazzles you, what inquiets you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>When my wife asked me: why Peter Saul? I said it&#8217;s about conti-<\/span><br \/>\n<span> nuity and consistency. What a crap she said. That&#8217;s what every<\/span><br \/>\n<span> critic says about every artist, that it must be about continuity<\/span><br \/>\n<span> and consistency. What was the momentum? she asked me. What was<\/span><br \/>\n<span> your momentum?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Then I told her about your book. And that, later at your studio,<\/span><br \/>\n<span> you had showed me around your paintings and your works on paper.<\/span><br \/>\n<span> paper. Finally you had opened up your drawn archive to me,<\/span><br \/>\n<span> rather studies, perhaps, or sketches, fragments maybe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>And I was struck. I fell for this.<\/span><br \/>\n<span> It is your thoughts, drawn but unrefined, your comments, caught<\/span><br \/>\n<span> but not filtered, it is an archive of you, but also an archive<\/span><br \/>\n<span> of me, of us, of our coummunities, our societies, our lives as<\/span><br \/>\n<span> mankind in a big bowl of boiling mishmash.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It is not processed by our languages, it is from your mind for<\/span><br \/>\n<span> your mind to keep in mind.<\/span><br \/>\n<span> It is 60 years or even more, I don&#8217;t know.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It is imagery, powerful, mostly enormous, it is forcing. It is<\/span><br \/>\n<span> not so much American, there is no warning or insurance against<\/span><br \/>\n<span> this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Maybe I was not prepared, surely I wasn&#8217;t insured against your<\/span><br \/>\n<span> imagery, and no one is, no one could ever be, could we?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This imagery, your imagery is mankind. Is us. Has been for a<\/span><br \/>\n<span> long time, and will never stop being. Brutal and at the same<\/span><br \/>\n<span> time loving. And it is everywhere, in Paris, or in New York,<\/span><br \/>\n<span> or at the end of the rainbow.
